The different implementation phases

Where carbon offsetting can feel like a quick solution, trees and their wood provide a lasting approach to carbon capture.

Photosynthesis

Forest ecosystems recycle carbon and play a major role in balancing the planet’s climate. The process of photosynthesis sees trees absorb carbon from CO2 in the atmosphere and store it in their trunk, branches, roots and leaves. They then release oxygen back into the air to help the world breathe.

Absorption capacity

The EcoTree story started in France. The annual carbon absorption capacity of French forests is estimated at 70 million tons of CO2 equivalent – that’s 15% of the country’s greenhouse gas emissions. A five-cubic-metre tree can absorb the equivalent of four flights to and from Paris and New York for a single passenger.

Vital carbon sink

Forests are one of the world’s greatest carbon sinks. Carbon is stored in living biomass, like tree trunks, plants, leaves and roots, as well as the dead biomass on the ground. In total, it is estimated forests store 8 billion tons of CO2 equivalent worldwide, second only to the planet’s vast oceans.

Long-term sequestering

After a tree is felled, its wood continues to store carbon. That CO2 – captured while the tree was growing – even remains stored through the lifetime of any product made with the wood. It can stay there for many decades and even hundreds of years.
