Orø-Margrete Forest Doubles in Size as New Trees Takes Root

Discover how Orø-Margrete Forest is coming to life, 40,000 trees planted to restore biodiversity and involve local communities.

Orø-Margrete Forest Doubles in Size as New Trees Takes Root
First, a quick look at the forestry project

Located on the heart-shaped island of Orø, in the Ise Fjord near Holbæk, the Orø-Margrete Forest is our third forestry project in Denmark. Since 2023, we have been transforming this former almost 10-hectare farmland into a sustainable, irregular forest designed to restore ecosystems and boost local biodiversity.

The first trees, such as Oak, Beech, Hornbeam, Wild Cherry, and Larch, were planted on the first 4,5 hectares in 2024. A meticulous soil preparation phase was carried out before the planting to ensure the best possible conditions for the young saplings. At the same time, an agroforestry project led in partnership with the local association Oroe Fællesjord supports biodiversity, water quality, and local producers on the island.

We planted the remaining area this year. The forest now measures 40.000 trees across approximately 10 hectares.

The forest will be open to the public when our foresters consider the trees to have grown enough and the forest is resilient enough to walk through. That means you’ll be able to visit the forest, which is an excellent opportunity to witness its transformation.

There are still a few trees in the forest without an owner, so if you’re quick, you can become the new owner of one or more trees in the Orø-Margrete forest.

The Orø-Margrete forest is growing thanks to you

A few weeks ago, we had the chance to reconnect with our clients, partners, and colleagues in the Orø-Margrete forest on the heart-shaped island of Orø in Denmark.

Kim and Tania, the foresters from Skovdyrkerne, guiding us during our visit to the Orø-Margrete forest.

Kim and Tania, the foresters from Skovdyrkerne, guided us during our visit to the Orø-Margrete forest.

Together, we planted new trees, but more importantly, we reflected on how far we've come: in just one year, the forest has come to life, thanks to the dedication and support of everyone who has believed and invested in this project.

On-site, Kim and Tania, the foresters from Skovdyrkerne, joined us at the forest visit and shared their daily work with us: how they monitor the trees' growth, take care of the young plants, and ensure the forest thrives under the best possible conditions.

Their insights gave the participants a deeper understanding of the key stages in a sustainable forestry project and the attention each area requires.

Plant today to grow tomorrow

With smiles on our faces, we worked hand in hand with the foresters, planting new trees with the help of tractors. We plant in lines not just for efficiency but also to ensure we plant the right mix and amount of trees, and ensure trails for future maintenance work. This time, we planted 10 tree species, including Sessile Oak saplings, which will take almost 191 years to mature fully.

We’re proud to know that our actions today will help create a greener future, one in which the planet, biodiversity, and future generations will benefit from our efforts together.

The awakening of the young shoots!

This year marks a significant milestone for the Orø-Margrete forest. It was truly moving to see how much the young shoots, which were barely visible last year, have already grown.

The EcoTree team, whether in the field or the office, works hard to raise awareness and show everyone that our precious planet is worth investing in.

To stay up to date with everything we do, follow us on Instagram! We share daily snapshots and stories from the field, introduce you to the people behind our forestry projects, and offer tips and inspiration to help you take action for nature. And if you’re curious about what the media, both local and international, are saying about our work, visit our “EcoTree in the Media” page.

A big thank you for your commitment

We’d like to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who has helped this forest grow. Without your support, none of this would have been possible.

A special thanks to Sustainable Changemakers, Tana CPH, the Danish-French Chamber of Commerce, and Skovdyrkerne for joining us on this incredible day.
It was a memorable and inspiring experience, shared with all of you! 💚
