#### Building your carbon contribution strategy

At the same time as defining its emissions reduction strategy, Mata Capital called on EcoTree to build its strategy for contributing to carbon sinks. The need was to identify the number and type of carbon credits to contribute until 2050. Several training sessions and follow-up meetings were held, as well as the creation of an annual management tool. Mata Capital was able to concretely define the type of projects to be financed as well as the annual quantities to comply with the environmental frameworks. It has also learned how to promote its commitment without resorting to greenwashing.

### FAQ

#### What are Nature-Based Solutions (NBS), and why do they matter for companies?

Nature-based solutions (NBS) are actions that protect, sustainably manage, and restore natural ecosystems, forests, wetlands, and soils, to address climate change and biodiversity loss simultaneously.

For companies building a credible **climate action plan**, NBS offer a scientifically grounded, long-term approach to carbon removal that also delivers measurable biodiversity benefits. Unlike purely technological carbon capture, NBS are permanent, scalable, and generate positive ripple effects for ecosystems and local communities. EcoTree's projects in France, Denmark, and Germany are designed to deliver exactly this: durable ecological value alongside verifiable carbon sequestration.

#### How does we select the forestry projects that generate carbon credits?

Project selection is rigorous and based on long-term ecological integrity, not short-term carbon volume. EcoTree prioritises projects that promote mixed-species, uneven-aged forests, include explicit biodiversity commitments such as preserving untouched forest areas, restoring wetland areas, or installing pollinator habitats, and are managed under continuous-cover forestry principles aligned with ProSilva or AFI standards.

All of EcoTree’s projects are located in Europe, in France, Denmark, Belgium or Germany, so that companies can **mitigate residual emissions as close to their value chain as possible**. Our methodology is public, third-party verified by Bureau Veritas, and based on 100-year forest management plans.

Read our white paper on [How to Choose High-Quality Carbon Credits](”https://ecotree.green/en/company/resources/white-paper/choose-high-quality-carbon-credits”)

#### What is the Voluntary Carbon Market (VCM), and how does it fit into a climate action plan?

The **Voluntary Carbon Market** (VCM) allows companies, investors, and NGOs to purchase carbon credits on a voluntary basis, outside of mandatory compliance schemes, as part of a broader **climate action plan**. It is the mechanism through which companies can take responsibility for their unavoidable residual emissions while working towards Net Zero.

Participation in the VCM signals a proactive commitment to global carbon neutrality and increasingly intersects with regulatory expectations under frameworks such as **CSRD (ESRS E1)** and the **EU Taxonomy**. EcoTree's credits, issued directly from our own forestry projects without intermediaries, are traceable in our public carbon registry and certified by Bureau Veritas. Download our guide: [Mini-Guide to the Voluntary Carbon Market](https://ecotree.green/en/company/resources/white-paper/our-mini-guide-to-the-voluntary-carbon-market)

#### Why should companies invest in carbon contribution rather than simple offsetting?

Carbon contribution is a more accurate and more ambitious framing than traditional carbon offsetting. Offsetting implies a right to keep emitting; contribution reflects a genuine commitment to the "avoid, reduce, contribute" pathway required to meet Paris Agreement targets. EcoTree's carbon credits support sequestration projects, meaning carbon is actively removed from the atmosphere and stored in living forests for at least 100 years, across multiple tree generations. This is a fundamentally different proposition from avoided-emissions credits, and one that aligns with the Net Zero Initiative's definition of high-integrity climate action. Investing in European NBS credits also keeps the contribution geographically relevant to where most European companies' emissions originate.

Read our white paper: [ 10 Questions to Ask Before Committing to a Carbon Contribution Strategy](”https://ecotree.green/en/company/resources/white-paper/guide-10-questions-to-ask-yourself-if-you-want-to-commit-your-company-to-a-carbon-contribution-strategy”)

#### What makes EcoTree's carbon methodology unique?

EcoTree has developed its own proprietary [carbon quantification methodology](”https://img.ecotree.green/documents/en_ecotree_carbon_methodology_15052023.pdf”), reviewed and certified by Bureau Veritas, a globally recognised certification leader. It is built on [mixed-species, continuous-cover forestry (SMCC)](”https://ecotree.green/en/companies/sustainable-forestry”), meaning forests are never clear-cut, and the carbon stock is never reset to zero. This ensures genuine **permanence**: the forest remains a living carbon sink across generations of trees, maintaining an average long-term carbon stock rather than cycling through boom-and-bust planting phases. The methodology was developed in collaboration with more than a dozen forest experts and managers and is publicly available on EcoTree's website. Credits are also registered in EcoTree's own carbon registry, with each credit assigned a unique identifier for full traceability.

This approach prioritises biodiversity and carbon: EcoTree actively manages forests to be more ecologically diverse than conventional forestry, even when this means slightly slower short-term sequestration rates, because climate resilience and biodiversity resilience are inseparable.

#### How do trees capture and store carbon?

During photosynthesis, trees draw CO2 from the atmosphere, isolate the carbon molecules, release oxygen, and store carbon in their trunks, branches, roots, and the surrounding soil. Carbon represents close to a quarter of a tree's total dry weight. [A single tree can absorb between 10 kg and 40 kg of CO2 per year](https://ecotree.green/en/how-much-co2-does-a-tree-absorb), depending on species and environment. Over a managed 100-year life cycle, a well-chosen forest stand sequesters significant amounts of carbon.

For example, EcoTree's [afforestation project in Northern Denmark](”https://ecotree.green/en/companies/offers/forest/nysum-forest”), converting a former gravel pit into 31.2 hectares of mixed-species continuous-cover forest, is expected to sequester approximately 6,200 tonnes of CO₂e over 100 years.

#### What makes a carbon credit genuinely high quality?

High-quality credits must satisfy four non-negotiable criteria:

**Additionality**: The sequestration would not have occurred without the project.
**Permanence**: The carbon is stored durably, not temporarily.
**Measurability**: The sequestration is quantified through a transparent, verified methodology.
**Uniqueness**: Each credit represents one tonne of CO2e and cannot be sold twice.

EcoTree's credits meet all four criteria, are certified by Bureau Veritas, and are traceable through our carbon registry.

Beyond these baseline standards, EcoTree also requires biodiversity co-benefits, European project location, and continuous-cover forestry management, factors that CSRD-reporting companies and ESG-conscious investors increasingly expect. Not all credits on the voluntary market meet this bar; several scandals involving projects with no real monitoring have highlighted the importance of third-party verification and local oversight.

Read our white paper: [How to Choose High-Quality Carbon Credits](”https://ecotree.green/en/company/resources/white-paper/choose-high-quality-carbon-credits”)

#### What is a carbon sink, and why are European forests particularly valuable?

A carbon sink is any ecosystem that absorbs more carbon from the atmosphere than it releases. Forests are among the most effective natural carbon sinks on earth. European forests are especially valuable for companies developing a **climate action plan** because geographic proximity matters: credits from local projects are more relevant to where your emissions are generated, more transparent in their monitoring, and increasingly favoured by regulators and sustainability frameworks.

EcoTree manages forest and peatland projects across France, Denmark, and Germany, all operating under strict European environmental standards, PEFC or FSC certification, and annual independent auditing. This local, monitored approach is the antidote to the opacity that has undermined confidence in global carbon markets.
