The funeral industry is changing, and nature is at the heart of it

Pontes and EcoTree are redefining end-of-life choices, planting trees and restoring peatland for every cremation. See what this means for impact-driven organisations.

The funeral industry is changing, and nature is at the heart of it

The funeral sector is not one often associated with environmental innovation. Yet quietly, meaningfully, something is shifting. Families are asking different questions. Operators are rethinking their role. And forward-thinking organisations like Pontes are proving that even the most intimate moments of human life can leave a positive mark on the natural world.

Pontes, a public crematorium operator representing 57 towns and municipalities in Belgium, has joined forces with EcoTree in an initiative that does exactly that. For every cremation, a tree is planted or a section of peatland restored in the Black Creek Valley (Zwarte Beek), a protected nature reserve in Beringen, Limburg. And for families who wish to go further, a €5 contribution unlocks an additional tree or peatland section in their loved one's name, each one certified and precisely located.

When the most human moments meet the natural world

End-of-life choices are becoming values-driven choices. Across Europe, people are increasingly looking for ways to ensure that the final chapter of a life reflects the things that mattered during it: care for others, responsibility toward future generations, and a connection to the living world. The funeral industry, traditionally slow to change, is beginning to respond.

Pontes Managing Director, Tom Wustenberghs, elaborates:
“We believe it is important, in difficult times, to offer some comfort and a message of hope and care for future generations to the bereaved. At the same time, the project highlights the growing need among people to link their choices – including at the end of life – to meaningful and sustainable causes. Supporting nature projects and charities thus takes on a deeper dimension: it becomes part of the grieving process and a lasting legacy.”

The nature connection runs deeper than symbolism

Peatlands store vast amounts of carbon, support rare biodiversity, and regulate water systems, yet they are among the most threatened ecosystems in Europe. Forests provide habitat, clean air, and long-term carbon sequestration. When a family chooses to restore a section of the Black Creek Valley (Zwarte Beek), they are not simply planting a memory. They are contributing to an ecosystem that benefits entire communities and future generations.

What this means for organisations thinking about impact

The Pontes partnership is a compelling example of what becomes possible when an industry starts to look outward, connecting its core activity to the natural systems we all depend on. It shows that nature-based solutions are not reserved for energy companies or large corporations. They belong wherever people are making meaningful decisions.

For organisations operating in sectors where human experience is central: healthcare, social services, public institutions, hospitality, there is a growing opportunity to link what you do to lasting environmental impact. Not as an afterthought, but as a genuine extension of your values.
