Taeda Pine - Overview

Taeda Pine - Overview

This species is called a Taeda Pine, also known as Loblolly Pine ("tadea" means "torch" in Latin and the Romans used the coniferous branches to make torches).

This evergreen incense pine can reach heights of 30-35m and grow to a diameter of 50-100cm. Some reach a height of 50m when mature. This pine is known for its straight trunkcovered in thin bark and thin branches without significant whorls. The fine, soft needles are grouped in threes. This species is monoecious, so it bears both male and female pine cones. The male pine cones are cylindrical, clustered, yellow-brown, and 2-4cm long. The females are green at first, then turn yellow-brown and finally fully brown at maturity.

It is very sensitive to drought and does not tolerate dry soil, but can acclimatise in altitudes up to 440 meters.
