About the Harz (Stolberg) forest

The Harz (Stolberg) forest, nestled in the heart of Germany, south of the Harz mountains, is a vast ancient forest massif. Mainly populated by beech and spruce trees, a storm hit this area in 2018, followed by a drought, causing significant damage. To prevent similar disasters in the future, the forestry project aims to introduce a mix of forest species better adapted to future climatic conditions.

Before planting, the destroyed forest areas need to be mulched to clear the soil. It was decided to plant a mixture of indigenous and resilient species, such as Sessile Oak and Douglas Fir, adapted to future climatic conditions. Planting is carried out by hand in the spring of 2024. Soil conditions and biodiversity are monitored, with regular adjustments made if necessary. The Harz region is one of Germany's most prominent natural areas. It is home to countless species of small animals and plants. Their natural habitat is under serious threat from forest degradation. It is, therefore, crucial to act quickly and precisely.
