Why are forests one of the best climate change solutions?

Forests are a key ally in the fight against climate change because:

ecotree

Carbon Sinks

They naturally absorb some of the CO2 emitted by human activities

ecotree

Resilient ecosystems

They regulate global temperatures

ecotree

Wood Production

They provide a renewable material for ecological transition: wood

5 ways our work is a response to climate change:

Sustainable Forest Management

Our approach to sustainable forest management in all our forests is rooted in respect—for the diverse tree species, the rich forest soils, and the wide variety of life, from bacteria and fungi to insects, mammals, and plants. We don’t use chemicals, and we do not clear-cut. Instead, we nurture the resilience of these ecosystems through continuous cover forestry, focusing on natural regeneration, diverse species, and maintaining a mix of tree ages.

EcoTree

Support for the European timber industry

Our work makes us a part of the European Forestry Sector, which is estimated to employ more than 3.2 million people directly and indirectly. According to the European Commission, the European forestry and timber industry generated a gross added value (GVA) of 23.2 billion euros in 2020. We contribute through energy transition and promoting short supply chains by planting and managing European forests with local partners.

EcoTree

Development of Nature-based Solutions

The Nature-based Solutions we propose align with the recommendations of qualified international bodies (e.g. UN, COP 15) to respond to the societal challenges we face while having a multi-faceted, positive impact on the environment. Defined by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as "actions to protect, sustainably manage, and restore natural and modified ecosystems that address societal challenges effectively and adaptively, simultaneously benefiting people and nature," NBS receive only 3% of global climate funding, whereas "30% of climate mitigation needed to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement can be provided by Nature-based Solutions.

EcoTree

A Committed B Corp

We are certified B Corp and have twice been ranked in the top 5% of the world's most effective companies for our climate change solutions. All our forests are PEFC or FSC certified, or in the process of being certified. Our legal notices are regularly updated, and we have been registered with the Autorité des Marchés Financiers since 2018 as an intermediary in miscellaneous assets.

EcoTree

Social Engagement

Our projects include school groups, persons with disabilities, and the unemployed: School children in Sarran and Corrèze made nesting boxes in a partnership project with Limousin Nature Environnement The beehives in the forests of Malicorne, Palotas, and Pontvallain are manged by beekeepers with disabilities from O3 Agri 4 tonnes of honey was dontaed to Restos du Coeur In Champeau Forest, a pond and honey hedges were established with the help of unemployed people.

"Great idea! A way of supporting biodiversity and preserving our forests by their own methods, all while creating financial capital for myself or my children. A responsive team that listens to their customers! Highly recommended. "

"EcoTree is a great way to support reforestation and re-establish biodiversity, using the appropriate species in suitable locations. It makes a great gift or personal monthly commitment. Plus, the benefit of profiting from the wood once it's cut and sold!"

Do you have questions? We have the answers!

How does EcoTree work?

EcoTree is a company of passionate people committed to sustainable forestry and biodiversity enrichment. We develop NBS in response to the climate crisis and diversity loss through local, sustainable, and natural measures. With offices in Brest, Paris, Copenhagen, and Toulon, we have one team dedicated to forestry management and another to biodiversity development. We work with local partners for planting trees and forest maintenance. EcoTree’s foresters design sustainable forest management plans and supervise the on-site management and work.

What's the benefit of being a tree owner?

Once you buy a tree, you own it. But, the tree remains part of the forest where it grows, which is EcoTree property. The EcoTree team takes responsibility for the healthy cultivation of your tree until it is cut, also known as the cutting horizon. You don’t have to lift a finger. We take care of everything. You receive the entire sum once your tree has been felled and the timber sold. You can not fell the tree yourself or provide any care or maintenance for it in any way. The tree you own is part of a greater ecosystem that specialists must manage. Aside from the economic advantage you’ll benefit from (about +2% per year), your tree will give an ecological advantage to society as a whole. It’s also a good idea to gift a tree to a loved one - to celebrate a birth, a marriage, St. Valentine’s, Christmas, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, or a life in Memorium.

How does my purchase at EcoTree help fight climate change?

Forests are one of Earth’s lungs (the other is the ocean). Your investment allows us to purchase, plant, and manage forests in France and Europe to absorb excess carbon dioxide to regulate global temperatures and decrease negative impacts. Our method of sustainable forest management rests on the principles of Pro Silva, which promotes continuous cover (no clear-cutting), irregularisation of forest stands, and species diversity. The promotion of biodiversity comes hand-in-hand with sustainable forest management. It’s not just trees that create carbon sinks, but other natural elements like wetlands and bogs, too.

Is planting trees enough to halt global warming?

The quick answer is 'no'. Planting trees and sustainable forest management aren’t enough to stop climate change, nor do they stop human activities that create greenhouse gas emissions (GHG), such as the burning of fossil fuels. We must start by reducing our GHG emissions. We can do this by reducing our energy consumption, considering our energy sources, and working on our daily energy efficiency. Trees are not the solution to all our problems, but one branch of the greater answer: we must take care of nature.

How do you price your trees?

Some places charge €1 for a tree, but EcoTree quotes an equitable price for the plantation and management of your trees. The cost of a sapling at a local nursery varies between €1 and €2. However, it’s essential to consider the cost of labour, plantation, and felling - plus every stage of managing a young forest (replenishment, clearing, thinning, partitioning, admin, etc.). We believe sustainable forest management must be done ethically: working with local businesses that pay their workers fair wages. The cost of one of our trees may seem pricey but is justified by these principles.

What is biodiversity?

Biodiversity is the diversity of living things. It exists in three parts: ecosystem, genetic, and species diversity. Today, ¾ of the living species we know about are insects, even though they have some of the fastest declining populations. Biodiversity represents the entire living world in all its variety. The more prosperous it is, the healthier nature is and the greater we benefit from it.

Is biodiversity in danger?

30% of all animal species in France are endangered. La Ligue de Protection des Oiseaux (LPO) estimates that 41% of bird species commonly found in French gardens each spring have decreased since 2012. Globally, more than one million species are threatened with extinction in the coming years. While several mass extinctions have occurred since the Earth began, the 6th mass extinction is happening faster and on a grander scale than ever before. It threatens the survival of humankind. This is why implementing climate change solutions in forests and all natural ecosystems (the ocean, wetlands, etc.) is imperative.

How can I help support biodiversity?

Contributing to our biodiversity projects does not benefit you financially, but it does allow us to carry out crucial actions that support nature during the current biodiversity crisis. It’s a form of philanthropy that anyone can give to the world we all share to make it a better place to live for ourselves and future generations. We have many ways of supporting biodiversity, such as creating beehives, planting melliferous hedges, installing nesting boxes, restoring wetlands, bogs, and riparian forests, rebuilding amphibian and reptilian habitats, and more.
