It has outlived empires, helped win battles, and may even hold the key to defeating cancer. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ### Common yew The **common yew** (*Taxus baccata*) is a native British evergreen conifer and one of the longest-lived trees in Europe, with specimens known to survive for thousands of years. You may also encounter it under the names European Yew or, particularly in North America, English Yew. It is native to most of Europe, with its northern distribution limits reaching as far as Norway and its southern limits extending into North Africa. In Britain, it is most at home in southern England, where it grows beneath the canopy of beech woodlands and on the chalk and limestone slopes of the South Downs. It is also a familiar sight in churchyards across the country, a presence that reflects thousands of years of cultural and spiritual significance. The **common yew** is a vital habitat species. Its dense hedges and understories offer protection and nesting opportunities for many birds, and the goldcrest and firecrest nest specifically in broadleaf woodland with yew understories. The fleshy red fruit is eaten by birds such as the blackbird, mistle thrush, song thrush, and fieldfare, as well as small mammals including squirrels and dormice. Beyond its ecological value, the **common yew** is one of the most resilient native trees in Britain. It is tolerant of full shade, exposed positions, and urban pollution, and can adapt to a wide range of soils, as long as they are well-drained. This adaptability, combined with its extraordinary longevity, makes it a powerful long-term addition to any mixed-species forest. ### Common yew - Overview ### Common yew - Overview Mature **common yew** grow to 20 metres, with reddish-brown, peeling bark and dark needle-like leaves arranged in two flat rows along each twig. The yew is dioecious; male and female flowers grow on separate trees, appearing in March and April. Unusually for a conifer, it produces no cones; instead, each seed sits inside a red, fleshy, open-tipped structure called an aril. Almost all parts of the yew are highly poisonous - bark, leaves, and the seed within the aril. The red flesh of the aril is the only exception. What truly sets the **common yew** apart is its longevity. It is not considered ancient until it reaches 900 years old, and some individuals are thought to survive for up to 5,000 years. The Fortingall Yew in Perthshire, widely regarded as the oldest tree in Britain, is estimated to be around 5,000 years old, making it one of the oldest non-clonal trees in Europe. In England, it thrives particularly in areas with relatively mild winters, abundant rainfall, and high humidity, as found in the coastlands of Hampshire and Sussex and in the lowland parts of the Lake District. The tree thrives in a variety of climates and soil types. It is typically found in shaded areas or the understories of deciduous forests and on limestone hills or cliff edges. It grows on most soil types if they are well-drained, but it is sensitive to long-lasting periods of poor drainage and frost. In Western Europe, **common yew** with root balls can generally be planted from mid-November to late April, though this depends on local climatic conditions. Being a slow-growing species, patience is essential, but the rewards are measured in centuries. ### The wood of Common yew Yew timber has been put to extraordinary use throughout history. In the Middle Ages, it was the wood of choice for the English longbow, and later for musical instruments such as the lute. Today, it is valued for furniture, gates, parquet flooring, panelling, and carving. The world's oldest known wooden artefact is a yew spearhead estimated to be around 450,000 years old. Demand for bow-making timber was so intense that yew was stripped from forests across Europe, contributing to a scarcity that helped accelerate the shift from longbows to firearms between roughly 1545 and 1595. Its most remarkable application, however, is a modern one. The needles of *Taxus baccata*are the source of docetaxel (Taxotere), a widely used chemotherapy drug for breast and other cancers. A tree that once armed medieval soldiers is now an instrument of medicine. ### The symbolism of Common yew The **common yew** has been a symbol of death, rebirth, and immortality across Celtic, Druidic, and Christian traditions alike. Druids planted it on sacred sites; early Christians built their churches on those same sites, and the yew trees stayed. The tradition endured, yew branches were carried at funerals and on Palm Sunday for centuries, and over 500 churchyards in England today contain yew trees older than the buildings beside them.
