It is a heavily drained peatland that a variety of different uses have shaped. Intensive and extensive meadows, and forestry are just some of the uses that have been implemented in the peatland through drainage and drainage channels. Now, a peatland restoration project is established on a sub-area in the southeast of the peatland. The goal is to potentially expand the area after a successful implementation of this first restoration project. One of the project's distinctive features is its aim to integrate peatland restoration with the cultural heritage of the region, particularly that of its local farmers. For that very reason, the peatland will most likely be used for extensive grazing once it has been rewetted, allowing it to continue being used for agriculture while also reducing GHG emissions. Temporarily closed to the public, the reopening is scheduled on 24/04 ### EcoTree’s initiatives ### EcoTree’s initiatives The Assling peatland, Brucker Moos project is focused on preserving its peat layers, which play a crucial role in storing carbon and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This effort not only benefits the environment but also brings several advantages to the surrounding area by maintaining essential ecosystem functions. One of the primary objectives of the project is to maintain a high water level. This will help the peatland act as a natural flood barrier during heavy rain, providing better protection against flooding. While the environment may not be ideal for very specialised bog species, the improved water conditions will still support a variety of wetland plants and animals, including different types of amphibians and wading birds.
