The Hazel is one of the first trees to flower each year, offering vital early pollen to bees and insects emerging from winter. Its dense, multi-stemmed form creates rich ground-level habitat for small mammals, birds, and invertebrates, making it a quiet but essential pillar of the forest ecosystem.
The Hazel (Corylus avellana) is a native European shrub-tree beloved for its catkins in late winter and its clusters of hazelnuts in autumn. Fast-growing and adaptable, it has been cultivated and coppiced by humans for thousands of years for everything from fencing to basket-weaving.

We acquired the Old Gravel forest in Nysum in December 2023. It is an old gravel pit located in Northern Jutland about 30 kilometers south of Aalborg, Denmark’s 4th largest city.
