### Red Cedar
The Western Red Cedar (Thuja plicata) is a coniferous species from northwestern North America introduced to Europe in the second half of the 19th century. It is often associated with Douglas fir in the lush forests of the North Pacific coast or along streams and swamps.
The Amerindians used its soft, light, resistant and rotproof wood to build totems, houses and canoes. Today, cedar is cultivated as an ornamental tree, mainly for hedging and less commonly used during reforestation.
\- Growth: rapid
\- Height: 50 to 60 meters
\- Foliage: evergreen with broad, flattened, scale-shaped branches
\- Trunk: often divided at the base
\- Bark: smooth during the early years, then cracked with age

### About Ploërdut 5 forest
Located in Brittany, our Ploërdut forest is made up of four individual plots that we acquired gradually over a period of time.
Ploërdut 5 has a small existing forest, which we have preserved. The rest of the area including meadows and a former agricultura land had already beeing cleared by the former owner. Here we will plant Beech, [Nordmann Fir](/en/species/15), [Sessile Oak](/en/species/4), [Scots pine](/en/species/23), [Western Red Ceder](/en/species/3), Giant Redwood,[ Sitka spruce](/en/species/1) and Monterey Pine with the aim of achieving a mixed forest with continuous cover.
