The Scots pine (Pinus Sylvertris in Latin) is a part of the Pinaceae family, like Fir and Spruce. Pinus is the Latin name for the Umbrella pine, while sylvestris means "wild, far from habitation". The Scots pine adapts well to different types of habitat. It grows well on mountains, sandy or gravelly soils, and less well in limestone soils.
