These plots, once cultivated or dedicated to dairy farming until 2020, were gradually abandoned with the disappearance of many farms in the area. It's on this fallow land that EcoTree is taking action: we're planting 22.47 hectares with mixed species, as part of a larger forestry project covering a total of 49 hectares. The plantations, scheduled for the 2026-2027 season, will transform this forgotten land into a living, resilient forest rich in biodiversity. The site has a high ecological value: it is part of the natural zone of ecological, floristic and faunistic interest (ZNIEFF) of the Ellé watershed, and falls within the perimeter of the Natura 2000 site "Rivière Ellé". The plots overlook the Aër - a tributary of the Ellé - to the north, and another stream which joins the Ellé to the south. Water quality is therefore at the heart of all our decisions. This mix of hardwoods and softwoods is no accident: it reflects a long-term forestry strategy, in which each species plays a role in the balance of the ecosystem. Half of the acquired forest, i.e. the areas already forested, is being preserved and managed as of now. The existing bocage will also be maintained in its current state, as will the wetlands, which are excluded from any planting. Several choices structure this approach: - **Mixed hardwood/softwood plantations** to create varied habitats, curb soil erosion and strengthen the forest's resilience to climatic hazards. -**The maintenance of the existing bocage**, including hedges and low walls, which constitute a natural corridor for local wildlife. -**The exclusion of wetlands** from the plantation perimeter, in order to preserve these particularly species-rich environments. -**The total absence of phytosanitary products**, for the benefit of insects, birds and aquatic species. By transforming this abandonde land into mixed-species forest, this project is helping to reconstitute a natural carbon sink on land that no longer fulfilled its function, while offering a natural space for future generations.
