About Melgven forest

About Melgven forest

Located in the Northwest of France in Brittany, the Melgven forest underwent clearcutting before we acquired it in 2020. The forest's name comes from the words "mell" (rounded hill) and "gwenn" (white). Thus Melgven means "the white hill".The forest grows on a northeast-facing slope with more than 1.000 mm yearly rainfall. The plot is suitable for Douglas fir and Chestnut, and the weed vegetation consists mainly of moor grass and ferns.
The area around the forest has historical sites dating back to the Gallo-Roman era.

EcoTree’s forestry actions

EcoTree’s forestry actions

When we took over the forest management, we cut the fuel wood growing on the plot to prepare to plant Douglas Fir and Chestnut. We prepared the soil by leaving Windrow on the plot and began the planting in the spring of 2022.
We coated the young trees in Trico, an agent based on sheep fat, which deters game from eating the plants.
In 2023, our foresters put in place protection around the Chestnut trees. They also replanted trees to replace the first young Douglas firs that did not survive.
In the coming years, we plan to continue to ensure good upkeep of the plot and to frequently clear the competitive vegetation, to allow the trees to grow.
